“Best In Show”
In her last year of high school, my buddy Amelija (Colors) received a much deserved “Best In Show” award in the district wide art show (no small feat considering the high school has nearly 1500 students). The show was curated by an independent panel of judges from the art department of several regional colleges. Her talent as an artist is only surpassed by her kindness and depth of character.
I vividly remember the first time I helped her out with her photography assignment both at my office and out in the field. As I watched her take pictures and then later when reviewing them together, I remember being incredibly impressed that for such a young kid she was already developing an interesting point of view in her work. Even though she is now a big time college student, I continue to be proud of this amazing kid. Colors, you might not be studying art at your school, but you will always possess the soul of an artist. You have already shaped my life for the better and I can’t wait to see the good you will continue to do in this world.
Above she is being interviewed about her work.
One quick funny story about Amelija. One time a group of us were ice skating and I was taking pictures and skating backwards at the same time. Well needless to say I fell right on my butt. This prompted Amelija to rush right over and with all seriousness in her voice say to me, “oh my gosh is your camera okay!” I kid you not.
