“The Kid Life
If someone were to look through my photographic archive (most would not want to since it is extremely extensive) a fair argument could be made that I have a fascination with children. Regardless of the work I have done, be it for NGOs and non-profits, magazines, newspapers, commercial, wedding and personal clients, etc., you will find that children seem to be a reoccurring theme throughout my images. For a guy who doesn’t have a child of his own, this might seem surprising. Yet when I consider my past history of growing up as an orphan in Korea until the age of 8, I am not surprised that images celebrating children or telling their stories keep popping up in my work. Children are important to me.
I have covered stories of children both domestically and internationally and they have been, more often than not, exceedingly generous with me by allowing me to photograph something real and honest in them. I’m grateful for that. I like to think that I have returned the favor by allowing myself to be a bit of an overgrown child around them and in my own life.
Above are some of the current kids in my own family. Yeah, they are special for sure!
I like this photo because in this single frame I feel like I have been given such an honest moment and a small glimpse into the nature of each of these kids. From left to right: Joshua is often in his own little world and not concerned about what everyone else is doing. Sydney and Alice are the two crazy hyperactive children in the family who are the jokers and crazies. Kwon is always so sweet and shy and at times unsure of himself and as a result was looking to Sydney to see what she was doing so he could copy her.

I love it! We are grateful that our Daniela is one of those children you have photographed. What a gift for us to call you our friend!

Thanks Michael! Photos of your family are on my list to share on this blog in the future if that is cool with you. I too am hugely grateful to have been able to document the life of your family for Compassion International’s magazine. You, your wife and your girls are my heroes and it is my privilege to call you my friends.

Uncle Andrew – that is a funny picture that you sent us! Me, Syd, and Kwon and Joshua. That was the funniest picture – when Syd put her finger up to her mouth, it was so funny! I laughed at it.
Thanks, Uncle Andrew. From, Alice
