“A Sweet Attraction”

It seems appropriate that Greta and her sweet new baby girl Lena are sitting beside several peony bushes crawling with ants in this photo.  I learned that day that ants are often found on peonies because they are attracted to the sweetness of a flowering bud.  I suppose in this respect I’m a bit ant-like in that I am wholly drawn to the irresistible sweetness of both Lena and my friend Greta.

Greta is an architect, elected public official, caring mother, generous wife, an artist and a magician with restoring antiques, but most important to me—a good friend.

Oh yeah, I also couldn’t help but make a visual comparison of sweet little Lena’s head (with hair to last two lifetimes) with that of the nearby peony flower. ;-)

Thanks for reminding me that I’m a lucky guy!

Ants are also beneficial to peonies because they eat the waxy coating and allow the flowers to bloom. (the word calyx is in the explanation, but I forget if that is the name of the waxy coating or some other part of the plant!)
