The Process of Remembering: a photoblog by andrew huth

“They Captured My Heart 05″

compassion-kids-05.jpg

I have to give big credit to the editor (Leanna Summers) I was working with for this picture.  She noticed this girl sitting bored and playing with her legs in front of a doorway and pointed it out to me (I think I was preoccupied with a bunch of kids jumping on me at the time ;-) .  I got a frame off before she noticed me.  After that….well you can see what happened in the second picture—hamming it up.

While working on an assignment for Compassion International in Korea I followed a man back to the orphanage of his childhood near the southern tip of Korea.  Although my time at the orphanage was brief, the unbearably sweet children there affected me deeply.  The mix of being reminded of my own orphan childhood with the knowledge that these sweet children were without parents to tuck them in at night choked me up for weeks after returning home.  Although their situation is sad, they, like most children, still experience the joys of curiosity and simple play.  I hope this short series will be able to express a bit of their joy in the face of adversity.  They have a great deal to teach us.  To see some background photos of me hanging out (literally) with some of the children you can go HERE.

Such wonderful reminder of my own disastrous childhood in Cambodia too. Thank you for sharing this joyous picture.

I am sorry that I could not visit your site for past week as I was away.

These two photos make a really nice pair… And I love the colors! That orange chair in contrast w/ the delicate blue-and-white patterns (on both the girl’s dress and the ceramic vases). Great work =)
