“Chopstick Fun”

em-chopstick.jpg

Eliza and Maggie are the precocious children of friends Steve and AnnaMaria and two of the most interesting children I have met.  This past weekend I enjoyed hanging out with them and was surprised how easy and fun conversations can be with bright children.

Some things I learned about them:

I learned that Eliza has a soft spot in her heart for ballet and magic tricks and dislikes celery so much that she defends the notion that they even smell bad.  She declared that she doesn’t even like to lick them.  On a positive note she is all about asparagus.  I was also happy to discover her sitting alone quietly for extended periods of time reading from time to time.

I learned that Maggie is an extremely cute version of a teeny-weeny Tasmanian devil with a propensity for giggling (one of the most infectious ones I have heard in a long time).  She has a soft spot for drawing (she drew Heather and me as penguins and gave them to us as gifts), wearing leggings with holes for her toes to breath through and bows in her hair.  During our first meal of beef with mushrooms, sweet potatoes, bread, pomegranate seeds and broccoli she expressed that it made her sad to eat the beef because an animal had to die.

While at a Thai restaurant I attempted to teach both of them how to use chopsticks for the first time.  I was pretty blown away how quickly Eliza picked up this skill as it is often rather difficult for many people.  Being the good student that she is she brought a set home to practice with.  Above, Eliza is working out the coordination while Maggie watches and…..yup giggles.

A child that likes Asparagus? I don’t think I’ve ever met one! And Maggie not eating beef because of what she feels is wrong, would break my heart. What young, bright girls!

What an incredible experience. Those young ladies are one up on me on something. I just can never learn how to hold them. I am so better off with a fork (I know you don’t want to hear that).
