While working on an assignment last week in Philadelphia I walked past this Great Blue Heron standing atop an iced patch of the Schuylkill River. When I returned to the same part of the river 2 hours later, it was still standing there as if frozen by winter’s cold breath. A local man fishing near the Heron told me that the bird always comes around these parts and stands for hours watching the fish swim under its feet. He told me that on and off throughout the day the bird pecks at the ice hoping to break through and retrieve a meal. Although he is a catch and release fisherman, he said the next fish he caught he would toss at the bird.

What a somber, but elegant photo!
