the process of remembering: a photoblog by andrew huth

While walking up from the subway terminal of the World Trade Center, I caught this kid getting a full running start from the top of the stairs (rather high) and having slid on one of the rails, get air and ultimately fall on the landing. I’m sure he didn’t stop to think that it was probably illegal. Nice air however.

This is fantastic. Is there post processing here? what is with the crayon like graininess and smeariness? it is powerfully dynamic and abstract. one of my favorites in a while.

Thanks for the comment. No post processing on this one except the addition of film grain (I shoot digital, but still prefer the aesthetics of film). The crayon like thing is the blue tiles of the sides (it was painted to make it look like a sky I think) of the walls under the WTC subway entrance. The reason it looks dynamic is because the picture was shot with a 1/8 shutter while I was panning with the skateboarder.

that’s one hot shot, Andrew! Love the way the skater is just hanging in the air – he appears as if he’s the only fixed object in the frame.

Thanks Paul. Having the central figure isolated in the frame from motion blur is an nice effect of panning the camera with the subject.

I am not impressed by his air. I get bigger air than this before breakfast on most days. I will bring my board next time I swing by and show you how its really done.

And I will nail the landing.
