the process of remembering: a photoblog by andrew huth

Part 2 of 3

The one thing I didn’t expect while approaching this peahen is that it would have more interest in me than I would with it. It made these quick head lunging motions at me and then just stared. This picture is of one of those lunging moments.

AHHH! This is great… I like how the blurry beak suggests your concerns about proximity and the precicous movements of this white turkey. I mean peacock. ;)

  2. K says:

Oh, I can spell. I also meant ‘precocious.’

Ahh, son! I didn’t want to tell you this after viewing RWP* part 1. For the sake of a captivating snapshot, you came so near death. This fowl is no peacock. It a rarely seen, blanched, cross bred (mutated, as it were), escaped domestic Plainville Turkey Farm turkey. You can tell by the silly little tuft atop its head, its white color of course, and, more importantly, the kind of lunging motion it makes when it approaches something. (The blank stare rarely follows such an approach. Usually it STRIKES with lightning fast speed … death is swift, but painful! Whew!!) You were so fortunate … see that little point at the end of its beak? Deadly poison!! He was ready to STRIKE, son! You need to be careful out there. Only trying to help, son. Keep up the good work; love you.

It has been brought to my attention that this bird is a white turkey and not a peacock (I have since made the correction). Peacocks around the world (looking at my blog) I’m sure were offended that I would put this turkey among them :-)

    Huth-
I do like both of your white peahen pictures so far. You know I am always up for a great debate, and I beg to differ on the turkey diagnosis. This is a female (which is why it does not have a long tail) white (not albino)peahen (vs. peacock for males). Please see the following pictures.

Though this is not a completely white peahen you can get the idea

Definitely a peafowl not a turkey!

    I guess I meant peahen…

Certainly no turkey, that! The Chardin on the Wikipedia site convinced me =)

    Cheers, K

Okay I too am convinced by Rachel’s (my brilliant biologist friend) research. Now I am getting hate mail from female peahens for calling it a peacock first and then a turkey next :-)

Turkey, Chicken, Peacock, Chickadee, Red-Winged Blackbird – I don’t care what the heck kind of fowl/bird aviary feathered thing it is. All I know is – I want to meet your Dad. His comments are the best. Deb

With all the other turkeys out there … let’s hear it now … GOBBLE! GOBBLE!! GOBBLE!!!

My boy is the greatest, ain’t he? Make sure you all attend his inaugural photo show in a couple of months, you dig? Otherwise, I send wild, poisonous peaturkeyettes to eat your pets!!
