With nature, as in other areas of life, patience is an important characteristic to have. I sat and watched this dragonfly for about 30 minutes while it flew about me over a small pond. Sit and watch nature live around you.
For the photography geeks like me: For this shot (which I took during daylight hours) I used a shutter speed fast enough to underexpose the image by about 1.25 stops and used my flash to light the dragonfly. In doing this you not only can stop some of the motion of the dragonfly, but you can also help separate the dragonfly from the background not only with depth of field, but also with light contrast. Oh yeah, manual focus was also a must.
